Safety

What Mahaul does to protect you, and what we expect from everyone who uses it.

What the app does for you

  • 18+, checked at sign-upYou give your date of birth when you join. If you're under 18, you can't make an account. If someone looks underage, report them.
  • First names onlyEveryone else sees your first name and your @username. Your surname is never shown, and search only matches first names and usernames.
  • No age or match score on profilesPeople cards don't show anyone's age or a compatibility percentage.
  • Anonymous wavesWhen someone waves at you, you see a count. You only learn who it was if you wave back.
  • Messages need a connectionOnly your friends and the people you've matched with can message you.
  • Approximate location, only with your consentIf you turn it on, your location is rounded to about 1 km before we store it. It's used for distances like “2 km away” and the distance filter. Nobody sees a distance past 300 km. Stop sharing my location deletes it.
  • No exact locationsOut this week shows friends an event, a venue or an area about 1 km wide. On the map, people are placed around a venue, never at their real position.
  • Report and blockReport a profile, post, message, event or gathering from its menu. If you block someone, they won't see you in People, search or contact matches, and they can't message you.

Community guidelines

Mahaul is for people who love the music and the night out. Be someone people are glad they met.

Please do

  • Use your real first name and photos of yourself.
  • Take no for an answer. If someone doesn't wave back, leave it there.
  • Look out for your friends, and for anyone who seems to need help.
  • Respect artists, venue staff and everyone working the night.

Don't

  • Harass, threaten, stalk or bully anyone, in the app or at an event.
  • Send sexual content to anyone who didn't ask for it. Anything sexual involving someone under 18 is removed and reported.
  • Attack people for their religion, caste, gender, sexuality, disability or where they're from.
  • Pretend to be someone else, or run fake accounts.
  • Scam people with fake tickets, fake events or fake giveaways.
  • Buy, sell or promote drugs.
  • Share anyone's location, phone number or other personal details without their permission.
  • Spam people or flood chats with promotions.

If you break these, we may remove content, warn you, or suspend or ban your account. Serious cases may be reported to the police.

What happens when you report

  1. You report it from the ⋯ menu on a profile, post, message, event or gathering, and pick a reason: spam, harassment, hate, sexual content, violence, impersonation, a scam, someone underage, or something else.
  2. A person reviews it. Reports go to our moderation queue and someone on the team looks at each one. The most serious, like threats or underage users, go first, and we aim to act on those within 24 hours.
  3. We act. We can remove content, warn, suspend or ban. If we act on your account, you'll see it under Settings → Account standing, and you can appeal from there.

On the night

  • Meet new people somewhere public, like the event itself, and tell a friend where you're going.
  • Sort out your ride home before you head out.
  • Watch your drink, drink water and know your limits.
  • If a friend isn't okay, stay with them and find venue staff or the medical team.

Mahaul isn't an emergency service. If you or someone else is in danger, call 112.

  • 112Emergency: police, fire and ambulance, anywhere in India.
  • 181Women's helpline.
  • 1930Cyber crime and online fraud. You can also report at cybercrime.gov.in.

Under India's IT Rules, 2021, Mahaul has a Grievance Officer. Write to grievance@apnamahaul.com, or in the app go to Settings → About & legal → File a grievance. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and aim to resolve them within 15 days.
